Hello and welcome! BarCod is a site that lets you find information about products before you buy them. Perhaps you're wondering how such a thing could be useful to you? Well, imagine the following scenario:
You are walking through the supermarket doing your weekly shopping. You remember you need paper towels and head over to the home cleaning aisle. And then you come across it...
A wall of paper towels!!!
Row upon row of them! Dozens of brands, too many options. All you have to make your decision with is two pieces of information, the items price and the brand names. What you really want to do is make the purchase that aligns with your particular values and beliefs. Perhaps you want to buy products which are environmentally friendly, or which are made by a company owned by people within your faith. Maybe you wish to buy products that are not made in sweat shops, or which are made locally. The question is, how do you find this information when you are standing in the aisle at the supermarket, when you have to actually make the decision?
That's where we come in. BarCod is a site designed to provide you with information about products when you need it, where you need it. Here's how it works:
First, you create an account on the site and tell us a bit about your tastes and interests. This will let us know what kind of information on products you are interested in.
Next, you download our barcode scanning application to your cell phone. In the store, you run this application and hold the barcode or isbn for the product you are considering purchasing in front of your cell phones camera.
The application will automatically recognize and decode the barcode. The application will then open your phones web browser and connect to our website and fetch information on the product you scanned and present it to you in a compact format so you can quickly learn about the product you are considering.
For this whole thing to work you will need one thing, one very specific thing. You will need a cell phone which has a built-in camera as well as a data plan that allows you to access the web from your phone.
